Stargaze was inspired by an old photo I found in the Art of New South Wales image archive. The photo is of a young indigenous girl, taken around the late 1800’s. These photos were taken as souvenirs to sell back in Britain. What drew me to the photo was the girls powerful gaze, a gaze that bores right through the photo. I created this piece by first capturing a high res scan of the original image. I then covered a black canvas with small white dots of highly reflective paint. Then I projected the digital image of the girl onto the reflective paint using a high quality image projector. The final image was created by capturing this projected image with a medium format digital camera.
